About PNGCC
Learn about the Papua New Guinea Council of Churches, our identity as an ecumenical body, our Christian foundation, and our role as the prophetic voice of the churches in Papua New Guinea.
Who We Are
The Papua New Guinea Council of Churches (PNGCC) is an ecumenical council that represents the unity and shared mission of Christian churches in Papua New Guinea. PNGCC was originally established as the Melanesian Council of Churches and later became the Papua New Guinea Council of Churches. Today, PNGCC serves as the prophetic voice of the churches, speaking on issues that affect the lives of Christians and all people in Papua New Guinea. PNGCC brings churches together to pray, reflect, dialogue, and act for the common good of the nation.
Our Identity
PNGCC is:
A national Christian body
A platform for church unity and cooperation
A bridge between church, government, and society
An advocate for the poor, vulnerable, and marginalised
PNGCC maintains an open-door policy for Christian fellowship groups that wish to participate in ecumenical work and also engages respectfully with other faith communities in Papua New Guinea, including Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu communities.
Our Faith Foundation
PNGCC believes in and worships One Triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and accept the Holy Scriptures as the supreme guide for faith and practice. We affirm the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds as expressions of the Christian faith.
A Christian Nation
The preamble of the Papua New Guinea Constitution affirms the country as a Christian nation. Since Independence in 1975, PNGCC and its member churches have played an important role in guiding and supporting this national identity by promoting Christian values, peace, justice, and unity.
