The PNG Churches Alliance on HIV Aids, comprising Heads of Mainline Churches and the PNG Evangelical Alliance has been called upon to respond to the Governments declaration of a National Health crises following the alarming increase in HIVAIDS infections across Papua New Guinea. Chairman of the National Aids Council, Mr. Wep Kanawi, made the appeal after the Councils request for Government funding to conduct nationwide awareness on HIV Aids was not supported. Mr. Kanawi urged Churches throughout the country to rise to the challenge and take a leading role in educating communities and raising awareness on the growing threat posed by HIV Aids. He emphasized that churches remain one of the strongest and most influential voices in communities and are strategically placed to deliver lifesaving messages of awareness, prevention, care and counselling support. As HIVAids infections continue to rise at an alarming rate, Mr. Kanawi called on church leaders to work together in unity to ensure that critical information reaches the people before the HIV Aids virus reaches them.
